July 2009 The marathon fundraiser was a HUGE success! All five of us finished in good time with no injuries and all three first timers are already talking about doing it again! All five runners together had over $8000 donated or pledged to the dormitory project! Thank you to all who helped make it happen... changing the world.
Running for Rwanda!!
Usually when you read a story about amazing runners in conjunction with Africa, it's the athletes that are from Africa. In this case, the tables are somewhat turned. These athletes are running FOR Africa.
Erik Roys (me) of Jewell has gathered an unbeatable and dedicated team to "Run for Rwanda" in the 2009 33rd annual infamous "Grandma's Marathon" taking place this June in Duluth, Minnesota. The team consists of five runners and their goal is greater than finishing the path to Grandma's finish line. Their goal is to spread the word about Rwanda, a tiny, densely populated country in central east Africa. In doing so they hope to gain support for the construction of a much-needed dormitory to safely house more than 400 students, in an area of the world that can really use the help.
Along with myself, South Hamilton High School students Zach Rueger and Nathan Johnston are excited to run their first full marathon and are confident they will complete the grueling 26.2 miles. Their dedication to the cause will not only test their physical abilities, but these young men are participating in a project that will impact students a world away for generations. That's good for the heart any way you look at it. Kecia Goodman, South Hamilton's Science teacher has also committed to run this year in support of the cause. This is not the first marathon for this seasoned runner, but no doubt a race that will help far more people than anyone can imagine. Kecia is also lending her running expertise and training tips to the three first-timers. Tim Fencl has also joined in the group to bring plenty of marathon experience and a passion for the project that is greatly appreciated!
These runners are working in conjunction with PROJECT RWANDA, a small local group that is committed to working with the ACEJ Karama Middle school in Gitarama, Rwanda. You can help by sponsoring a runner per mile or participating in one of the many fundraising activities that this hardworking group is making available!
If you see any of these runners training out on the roads, HONK your horn as you drive by to show your support!!
